Values

At Hawkesley Church Primary Academy, we say to our pupils ‘let your light shine’ Matthew 5:16. As staff, our role is to create a school, and deliver a curriculum, which equips our children, staff and community to thrive and experience life in all its fullness (John 10:10).

We draw strength and example from God to help us provide an education and quality of care rooted in enabling all to realise and share their God-given talents and skills.

We look to Matthew 5:14a & 5:16 to guide us:

‘You are the light of the world…let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven’ (Mathew 5:14a &16).

As a staff body, we interpret this to mean that we are people called to be light; illuminating our community through selfless service and demonstrating our shared greatness through Christian ethos and virtues. We intend to develop our pupils to shine as light in the community, through voluntary giving of their time, talent and skills, for the good of all.

In order to successfully equip our children to shine, the following four tenets are at the core of all that we do:

Greatness – As a school community, we strive for greatness in all that we do. Our children and community deserve the very best.  We take a non-complacent approach in working towards greatness in all that we do. David is our ‘Greatness’ biblical role model as he was able to defeat Goliath with his faith in God.

Learning Community – At our school, we are the Hawkesley ‘family.’ We shape our school to be a place where everybody, no matter who you are, is growing, learning and happy together. Noah is our ‘Learning Community’ biblical role model as he was able to bring people/animals together for a common purpose when he built the ark.

Same, but different – we explicitly teach our children to recognise the similarities that bind us together, whilst developing the children’s understanding about the differences which enrich and diversify our society and our lives. Esther is our ‘Same, but different’ biblical role model as she was an advocate for the Jews. Even though she was Queen, she risked her life and fought against their persecution.

Golden Rule – the bible teaches us ‘do to others as you would have them do to you’ (Luke 6:31). This rule is featured within all of the world’s major religions and is central to how we treat others. The Golden Rules helps us to maintain a harmonious school. Ruth is our ‘Golden Rule’ biblical role model as she looked after Naomi when her sons and husband died due to the famine.

‘Do to others as you would have them do to you’

Luke 6:31

As a Church school, the bible demonstrates to us the impact of living the values embodied by Jesus. Our 18 school values are summarised within our ‘LIGHT’ acronym:

Love
Integrity
Greatness
Honesty
Trust

At Hawkesley, our values are not for reciting, but are for living! They are shared within collective worships, developed through weekly values missions, practised within daily classroom life and applied during our wider learning, both in and out of the classroom. We believe that these values enable children to live out the four tenets.
