Intent, Implementation, and Impact Statement for Physical Education
Intent
At Hawkesley Church Primary Academy, we aim to deliver a high-quality Physical Education (PE) curriculum that promotes physical fitness while nurturing the holistic development of our pupils. Our PE programme is rooted in our ethos of inclusion, respect, and personal growth allowing our children to ‘Let your Light Shine.’ Our intent is to:
- Ensure All-Inclusive Participation: We are committed to providing all pupils, regardless of ability, background, or additional needs, with opportunities to engage in PE activities that inspire a lifelong love of being active. Our inclusive approach reflects our vision of supporting and challenging every child to achieve their potential.
- Promote Physical Health and Wellbeing: Through a diverse range of physical activities, we aim to instill an understanding of the importance of an active lifestyle. Pupils will learn how regular physical activity supports their overall health and wellbeing.
- Foster Personal and Social Development: Our PE curriculum is designed to develop teamwork, resilience, and leadership skills. By engaging in collaborative sports and activities, pupils learn to respect and support one another, communicate effectively, and grow as confident individuals.
- Encourage Growth and Progress: At Hawkesley, we emphasise personal growth and individual progress over comparative results. Our focus is on equipping pupils with fundamental skills, physical literacy, and a positive attitude toward physical activity, preparing them for future challenges.
- Support Lifelong Learning: By nurturing motor skills, cognitive development, and emotional wellbeing, we prepare pupils for lifelong engagement in physical activity and exploration of new opportunities.
Implementation
Our PE curriculum is carefully structured to ensure that every pupil benefits from engaging, inclusive, and enriching experiences:
- Curriculum Design: Our curriculum adheres to the National Curriculum for PE, offering a balanced programme that includes gymnastics, team sports, individual sports, dance, outdoor education (forest school) and swimming. Lessons are progressive, building on prior learning to challenge all pupils appropriately.
- High-Quality Teaching: Our staff are trained to deliver engaging and inclusive lessons. Where possible, we employ specialists to enhance the quality of instruction. Teaching strategies include demonstrations, guided practice, and constructive feedback tailored to individual needs.
- Assessment for Growth: We focus on developing fundamental skills, physical literacy, and positive attitudes. Assessments are adapted for different abilities and ages, aligned with our SEND vision. We work collaboratively with parents and the Inclusion Team to ensure all pupils, including those with additional needs, are supported and challenged. Progress is measured holistically, encompassing social, personal, moral, and spiritual growth.
- Opportunities for Physical Activity: Pupils have daily opportunities to be active through initiatives like the Daily Active 15, lunchtime sports clubs, after-school clubs, and inter-school competitions. We provide exposure to a wide range of sports, including unique opportunities such as fencing and archery, ensuring pupils experience activities they might not otherwise encounter.
- Extracurricular Opportunities: We offer a wide array of after-school clubs and competitive opportunities, encouraging participation from all pupils. We facilitate inter-school competitions and community sports events to further enhance engagement and experience.
- Continuous Assessment and Adaptation: Regular formative assessments are embedded into our PE programme to track progress and adapt teaching strategies to meet the needs of individual learners. We ensure that pupils receive specific feedback to aid their development.
- Extracurricular Enrichment: We offer an extensive range of extracurricular activities, fostering participation and engagement. Inter-school competitions and community sports events further enhance pupils’ experiences and provide opportunities for teamwork and collaboration.
- Health and Safety Protocols: We prioritise the safety of our pupils during all physical activities by adhering to national safety standards. Risk assessments are conducted regularly, and safety protocols are communicated effectively to both staff and pupils.
Impact
The impact of our PE programme at Hawkesley Church Primary Academy is measured through both qualitative and quantitative outcomes:
- Pupil Engagement and Enjoyment: Feedback from pupil surveys highlights high levels of enjoyment and enthusiasm for PE lessons. Increased participation in extracurricular activities reflects the positive culture surrounding physical activity.
- Physical Development and Skills Mastery: Assessments show significant progress in pupils’ physical literacy, with many demonstrating proficiency beyond age-related expectations. This includes the acquisition of fundamental movement skills and confidence in physical competence.
- Personal Growth and Teamwork: Observations indicate that pupils are developing essential personal and social skills such as leadership, communication, and teamwork. Positive peer support is evident in lessons and extracurricular activities.
- Increased Awareness of Health and Wellbeing: Through our curriculum, pupils demonstrate a strong understanding of the importance of healthy lifestyles. This awareness is reflected in their ability to make informed choices about physical activity and nutrition.
- Sustained Participation Beyond Primary Education: Exit surveys reveal that a significant percentage of pupils intend to continue participating in physical activity and sports as they transition into secondary education, reflecting the foundation we have laid for lifelong engagement in physical activity.
At Hawkesley Church Primary Academy, our PE provision goes beyond developing successful athletes. We aim to nurture well-rounded individuals who embrace physical activity as a vital part of their lives. Through our commitment to inclusion, growth, and opportunity, we inspire pupils to achieve their best, regardless of their starting point, and to carry forward the values and skills they develop in our school community.
