Reading For Pleasure
At Hawkesley, reading for pleasure is more than just a pastime — it’s a gateway to imagination, empathy, and lifelong learning. When children discover the joy of getting lost in a story, they begin to see the world through new eyes, unlocking creativity and confidence that extend far beyond the classroom. In our vibrant school community, we celebrate books as tools for empowerment, helping every learner find their voice, broaden their horizons, and build a love of learning that lasts a lifetime. At Hawkesley, every page turned is a step toward a brighter future.
Take a look below at all the wonderful things we do to promote Reading for Pleasure at Hawkesley…
Our fabulous library:
Our recently refurbished school library at Hawkesley is a truly special space—warm, welcoming, and designed to inspire a love of reading. It’s a place where children can relax, explore new stories, and immerse themselves in books that spark imagination and curiosity. Each class enjoys a weekly visit, giving every child the opportunity to discover new favourites and develop their reading habits. The library is lovingly maintained by our Reading Champions, who help keep it organised and inviting, making it a treasured hub of learning and enjoyment at the heart of our school.
Author Spotlight:
At Hawkesley, we celebrate a love of literature through our half-termly Author Spotlight, where we shine a light on inspiring writers whose work captivates and engages our pupils. This term, we are thrilled to feature Tom Fletcher, whose imaginative storytelling and vibrant characters have sparked excitement across the school. From his magical adventures to his laugh-out-loud humour, Fletcher’s books are helping to foster a genuine enthusiasm for reading, reinforcing our commitment to placing reading at the heart of our curriculum.

Reading suitcases:
At Hawkesley, reading doesn’t stop at the classroom door—it’s part of our playtime too! Our Reading Suitcases, filled with a rich variety of books, are available for children to enjoy during lunch and playtime. These portable libraries encourage spontaneous reading moments and help embed a culture of reading for pleasure across the school day. Carefully looked after by our dedicated Reading Champions, the suitcases are treasured by pupils and serve as a wonderful way to promote independence, choice, and joyful engagement with books in every corner of the school.
What the Teacher is Reading:
At Hawkesley, we believe that fostering a love of reading starts with passionate role models. That’s why our teachers proudly share their current reads through our “What the Teacher is Reading” displays, found throughout the school. These posters spark curiosity and encourage informal book talk between staff and pupils, helping children see reading as a lifelong habit and a source of joy. Whether it’s fiction, non-fiction, or poetry, these glimpses into our teachers’ reading lives help build a vibrant reading culture where stories are shared and celebrated.
